1. The Outdoor AC Unit Isn’t Running Properly
Your central AC system relies on both indoor and outdoor components. Even if the indoor blower is moving air through your vents, the outdoor condenser must be operating correctly for the system to remove heat from your home.
If the outdoor unit is buzzing, humming, or making unusual noises while the fan isn’t spinning, there may be a problem with the capacitor, fan motor, electrical components, or another part of the system.
Continuing to run the AC when the outdoor unit isn’t working correctly can potentially lead to additional damage.
2. Low Refrigerant or a Refrigerant Leak
Refrigerant plays a critical role in transferring heat from inside your home to the outdoors.
If the system is low on refrigerant, your AC may continue running for long periods without reaching the temperature set on the thermostat.
Possible signs of a refrigerant problem include:
- Warm or lukewarm air from the vents
- AC running much longer than usual
- Reduced cooling performance
- Ice forming on refrigerant lines or the indoor coil

You can also check whether the outdoor AC unit is operating.
